Screenshot file format not accepted

App Store Connect accepts only .jpeg, .jpg and .png screenshots, and Google Play only JPEG or 24-bit PNG, so HEIC photos from an iPhone, WebP exports and GIFs are refused. Convert them to PNG (without alpha) or JPEG.

“Upload screenshots in .jpeg, .jpg, or .png format.”

You’ll see this when…

  • The file came from an iPhone photo (HEIC).
  • A web tool exported WebP.
  • The file extension says .png but the content is something else.

How to fix it

  1. Check the real format with the size checker (it reads the file’s first bytes).
  2. On a Mac, open it in Preview and export as PNG or JPEG.
  3. Remove alpha if you export PNG.

Format doesn’t change the size: a 1320 × 2868 HEIC must be re-encoded, not resized

Frequently asked questions

Does App Store Connect accept WebP?

No. Apple’s screenshot specification lists .jpeg, .jpg and .png.

Why does my iPhone photo fail?

Photos are often HEIC. Convert to PNG or JPEG; also make sure the size matches an accepted screenshot size.

Is JPEG quality a problem?

Use high quality (90+) so text stays sharp; artifacts around text look cheap.
