App Store Screenshots: MCP Server or Agent Skill?

You don’t need an MCP server to generate App Store screenshots from a coding agent: AppShotEditor’s open Agent Skill uses a SKILL.md plus a Node CLI that any skill-capable agent can run. Some other tools do offer MCP servers (listed below, as of October 2026), and the right choice depends on which your agent supports.

MCP server or Agent Skill?

An MCP server exposes tools over the Model Context Protocol; the agent calls them during a session. An Agent Skill is a folder with instructions (SKILL.md) and scripts that the agent reads and runs with its normal shell access.

For screenshots, both end the same way: something composes layouts and gives you files or a link. The skill approach needs no long-running server and no MCP configuration, only a cloned folder and a token.

Screenshot tools with MCP (as of October 2026)

From each product’s own site:

  • ButterKit: a built-in MCP server in its macOS app (works with Claude Code, Cursor and Codex).
  • AppScreenshotStudio: REST and MCP API on its Growth and Pro plans.
  • AppLaunchFlow: links an MCP integration from its pricing page.
  • AppShotEditor: no MCP server; an open Agent Skill for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and opencode.

The kind of set you get back

The skill composes with the same shot-dsl engine that drew this example. Open it in the editor to see the layers, or download the PNGs.

Frequently asked questions

Does AppShotEditor have an MCP server?

No. It ships an open Agent Skill (SKILL.md + Node CLI) instead, which works in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and opencode without MCP setup.

Can an MCP-only client use the skill?

Only if it can read skill instructions and run shell commands. If your client only talks MCP, use the browser editor, or a tool that ships an MCP server.

Is one approach more secure?

Both act with your credentials. The skill uses a revocable API token and uploads only the screenshots you point it at; check what any MCP server can access before you connect it.
