App Store Screenshots with Codex
To make App Store screenshots with the OpenAI Codex CLI, clone the appshot-screenshots skill into ~/.codex/skills, export APPSHOTEDITOR_TOKEN, and ask Codex for App Store screenshots in your app’s repo. It writes benefit headlines from your code and returns a link to an editable, device-framed set.
Setup in 6 steps
- 1 Install Node 22+ and clone the skill into ~/.codex/skills/appshot-screenshots.
- 2 Sign in at appshoteditor.com/account and create an API token (a free account is enough).
- 3 Export it in the shell you start Codex from: export APPSHOTEDITOR_TOKEN=ase_…
- 4 Open your app’s repository in Codex and ask for App Store screenshots.
- 5 Point the skill at a folder of simulator or device screenshots (PNG, JPEG or WebP).
- 6 Open the appshoteditor.com/app?import=… link it returns within 24 hours, signed in, and fine-tune the set.
git clone https://github.com/AppShotEditor/app-store-screenshots-skill.git \ ~/.codex/skills/appshot-screenshots
Then ask:
> Make App Store screenshots for this app using the PNGs in ./artifacts/screens.
Set up Codex
Clone the skill into ~/.codex/skills/appshot-screenshots. Codex reads the same SKILL.md instructions as other agents; the heavy lifting is a bundled Node CLI.
Export APPSHOTEDITOR_TOKEN before you start Codex. If Codex runs commands in a sandbox, allow network access for the skill’s CLI so it can reach appshoteditor.com.
In CI or headless runs
Because the work happens in a CLI, the same flow can run non-interactively: give Codex the prompt, the screenshot folder and the token as an environment variable, then open the returned link yourself within 24 hours.
The kind of set you get back
The skill composes with the same shot-dsl engine that drew this example. Open it in the editor to see the layers, or download the PNGs.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same skill as for Claude Code?
Yes. One repository, one SKILL.md; only the folder you clone it into changes (~/.codex/skills for Codex).
Why does Codex say it can’t reach appshoteditor.com?
If commands run in a sandbox without network access, the CLI can’t upload screenshots or publish the handoff. Allow network access for that command.
What does the token give the skill access to?
Your AppShotEditor account’s screenshot storage and handoff links. Revoke it on the account page at any time.
